Have you ever noticed when you are talking with someone the person often move his eyes in some direction when some question has been put up to him this is because our eye movement both vertically and laterally seems to be associated with activating different parts of our brain. In neurology this movements are called LEM ( Lateral Eye Movement) and in NLP it is called Eye Accessing Cues it gives us insights on how people accessing information from their mind. These cues indicates what the person thinks. Whether he is remembering a picture, sound, past event or creating an image, making a sound or taking to themselves etc.
The Eye Movements as mapped out by NLP developers Richard Bandler and John Grinder:
Note: This illustration assumes that you are facing the other person (their right is your left).
Common Eye Patterns:
Visual Remembered (Vr):
Remembering visuals, images from the past. If you ask someone “What is the color of your first bike?”, his eyes would be moving to Up and to the Left position.
Visual Constructed (Vc):
Constructing or creating visuals, images. If you ask someone “What would your house looks like if it were painted violet with big white circles?”, his eyes will be moving towards Up and to the Right.
Auditory Remembered (Ar):
Remembering of sounds and music. If you ask someone “What does his voice sounds like when he was 10 years old?”, his eyes would move to the Center and Left position.
Auditory Constructed (Ac):
Creating a sound or manipulating a sound. If you ask someone “What would your voice sound like in 20 years?”, his eyes will be moving to the Center and Right side.
Kinesthetic:
Its both the emotional feeling and sensations. If you ask someone “What does it fell like to walk barefoot on a Ice?”, his eyes will be moving to the Down and Right side.
Auditory Digital:
Internal dialogues (talking with themselves). The eye movement will be Down to the Left side.
The patterns mentioned above are commonly found in most people, some people have it reversed usually the left-handed people. Some people's eyes do not move because they have a look to talk rule. When you look their eyes and talk with them they also look at you and their eyes will not move or it may move very quickly. What happened here is they are defocusing their eyes so their internal eyes will be moving in appropriate direction.
Also there are other chances like the person knows the answer very well so they don't need to search or think for the answer so their eyes wont move in any direction.
How this Eye Cues used to detect lies:
Let's say your friend haven't came to your birthday party and make excuses that he has been sick that's why he couldn't make it up to your party and you ask him did he take any treatment, has he gone to any doctor? If his reply was Yes looking to the Up and Right position, then this indicates he is constructing the visuals so it's a lie. Looking at his Left would indicates he is remembering the images so it's a truth.
